Popular Diet Sweeteners

How Safe Are Diet and Artificial Sweeteners?

The two most popular diet sweeteners are aspartame and sucralose. They are both considered artificial sweeteners. There are many studies out there that indicate aspartame may have a potential for some dangerous side affects. Sucralose, sold under the brand name "Splenda" appears safer but may have some long-term health detriment.

Right now, the studies seem mixed on any harm caused by Splenda. Most food manufacturers use aspartame - it is cheaper than sucralose to use as a diet sweetener in foods.

Many people prefer to avoid all diet sweeteners. On the other hand, many of us like a little sweet once in a while. I have been using Splenda and Stevia.

However, I've recently heard about a couple of newly marketed diet sweetener alternatives that seems to have zero side affects. Learn more about diet sweeteners and decide for yourself.

  • Stevia
  • is championed by natural-foods advocates in the United States, Japan, and some other countries. Stevioside comes from the leaves of the stevia plant which is native to Brazil and Paraguay. Stevioside provides 250 to 300 times the sweetness of sugar. It is stable to 200°C (392°F), so can be used in cooking if kept under those temperatures. In baking it doesn't create the browning reactions that sugar does. While not FDA approved, it does allow stevia to be used in dietary supplements.

  • Sucralose
  • is sold under the trade name Splenda. It is 600 times sweeter than table sugar (sucrose) and four times as sweet as aspartame. It is used in baking and in foods that are heated because of its stability under heat and other conditions.

  • Aspartame
  • is sold as Equal and NutraSweet. It has increased in usage and is the mostly common artificial sweetener and is used in foods and beverages. It is not useful for baking because it loses its sweetness when heated. Controversy over suspected health risks is causing people to steer away from aspartame. If you are worried about it, read the labels. Aspartame is cheaper and many food manufacturers prefer to use it.

  • Erythritol
  • occurs naturally as a sweetener in many common foods. It is not an artificial diet sweetener but is made from sugar using a fermentation process. I have found this product difficult to find, so am providing a link to a website that manufactures this sweetener under the brand name Zsweet.® CLICK ON PICTURE TO SEE THEIR SITE

They offer free shipping for even a moderate sized order. So my thought is, why look all over the place for it? Love having the shipping companies spend the gas money and deliver it to my door. Less shopping time means, more time to quilt and design website!

The product is a 100% natural, zero calorie sweetener - tastes great! All of the ingredients in Zsweet® are non-GMO, as well as gluten free, kosher, vegan, and contains no known allergens. It is a NO WORRIES sweetener - NO BAD or HARMFUL SIDE EFFECTS.

  • Tagalose (Tagalose, D-lyxo-Hexulose)
  • is a white, odorless, sweet-tasting powder. It has the same formula, but a different shape. It is 92% as sweet as sugar and browns like sugar - which is great when baking.

Technically, it is sugar. But it's sugar with almost no calories. It's 100-percent natural - not synthesized, unlike other "sweeteners" that are chemically synthesized or derived from sugar, Tagatose is a naturally occurring sugar. And SPHERIX has discovered and patented a way to make it available for use as a food additive as well as for a variety of other uses. Like sugar alcohols, it does not affect insulin levels. It doesn't promote bacterial growth or tooth decay.

Spherix is currently running a Phase 3 clinical trial to study the use of Naturlose® as a treatment for Type 2 diabetes. If the Phase 3 trial establishes that Naturlose® is an effective treatment, Spherix will prepare a New Drug Application (NDA) for presentation to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Pasted from

While it is not yet commercially available, I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more about this product.

The upshot of it is this: diet and artificial sweeteners can lend variety and interest to your diet without adding calories. Choose the Matol diet and artificial sweeteners or your choice may be added to your other foods.
